And here are a few more paintings all done this past week.
Both instruments depicted above are traditional Xhosa instruments played with a bow but neither is the umruhbe heard on Nandel'ekhaye (Married at home) from the collections Voices of the World. Dave Dargie, who recorded Lungisa in 1983 plays a uhadi while Lungisa holds what I believe is a mamokhorong. These two important mid-century European painters joined forces to in 1960 to improvise on a variety of musical instruments. Dubuffet recorded these sessions and they can be found on Musique Phénoménale. Asger Jorn/Jean Dubuffet
